COAL CREEK BOYS

Coal Creek Boys is a roots-driven band founded by songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist John Paul Smith. Born in Fernie and raised throughout the Elk Valley of southeastern British Columbia, Smith grew up surrounded by the mountains, mining towns, forests, and working-class communities that would later inspire much of his songwriting.

Blending country, folk, bluegrass, rock, and Americana, Coal Creek Boys creates music that is both rugged and timeless. Their songs draw from the history, hardships, triumphs, and traditions of mountain communities across Western Canada and Appalachia, exploring themes of family, resilience, faith, love, heartbreak, outlaws, and life on the frontier.

Over the years, Coal Creek Boys have built a loyal following through powerful live performances and authentic storytelling. The band has appeared on major festival stages including the Calgary Folk Festival, Big Valley Jamboree, and Dauphin’s Countryfest, sharing their music with audiences across Canada.

Their recordings have received radio airplay throughout Canada and the United States, while their growing catalog has generated more than 75,000 digital streams and downloads. Their independent vinyl releases have also found an enthusiastic audience, with thousands of  Physical cd's and Vinyl records sold, reflecting a continued appreciation for traditional music presented with heart and authenticity.

Today, Coal Creek Boys continue to write, record, and perform music that honours the people and places that shaped them. Rooted in the spirit of the Canadian Rockies and inspired by the enduring traditions of North American roots music, the band remains committed to preserving stories worth telling and creating songs that resonate across generations.
